Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Are L Codes Billable by a Hospital?

Question:

Are L codes, such as HCPCS code L3720 Elbow orthosis, double upright with forearm/arm cuffs, free motion, custom fabricated billable by a hospital?

Answer:

Yes, there are certain items of durable medical equipment (DME) that may be reported by a hospital without requiring a DME license. The item would need to be assigned to a separately reportable status indicator, such as A Services furnished to a hospital outpatient that are paid under a fee schedule or payment system other than OPPS or N Items and Services Packaged into APC Rates and be designated as a prosthetic/orthotic (PO) in the DME fee schedule.
