Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Billing for Incomplete Manometry Procedure?

Question:

We had an outpatient procedure for a manometry where the patient was taken into the endo suite to perform the manometry. The patient did not tolerate the procedure; after a few attempts the procedure was cancelled. How do we bill for the attempted procedure?

Answer:

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 91010 ESOPHAGUS MOTILITY STUDY does not use anesthesia, so you may report the service with modifier 52 Reduced Services because the patient was taken back to the endoscopy suite and the procedure was attempted.
