Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Billing for Infusion Run Time?

Question:

A patient received a COVID-19 monoclonal antibody infusion and starts to have a reaction. Is the M code still billable, or does the infusion have to run a certain amount of time in order to charge for the administration?

Answer:

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) M codes for administration of the COVID-19 monoclonal antibody administration are not time-based. The appropriate M code may be reported. If the infusion was discontinued due to circumstances that affect the well-being of the patient, then modifier 52 Reduced Services may be used.
