Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Billing for Moderate Sedation?

Question:

In order to bill for Moderate Sedation (CPT Codes 99151-99157), how many medications/agents are required to be administered? A single sedation agent or a combination of agents?

Answer:

When reporting moderate sedation Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes, the number of medications are not used in code selection. Code selection is based on who is performing the procedure and time. The intraservice time, also known as the skin-to-skin time, is used to determine code selection.
