Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Billing Lab Test More Than Once?

Question:

Can 87186 be charged more than one time per organism for susceptibility?

Answer:

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 87186 Susceptibility studies, antimicrobial agent; microdilution or agar dilution (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] or breakpoint), each multi-antimicrobial, per plate, may be reported for each multi-antimicrobial per plate. When testing for the same organism on the same plate, then it would not be appropriate to report more than once.
