Ask A Rev Cycle Expert: Code Difference for PICC Flush vs. Port Flush?

Question:

Is there a difference in the code to use if the department is only performing for that date of service a PICC flush with a dressing change vs. a PORT flush with a dressing change?

Answer:

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 96523, IRRIG DRUG DELIVERY DEVICE, may be used to report flushing or irrigation of an implanted vascular access port or peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) when flushing/irrigation is the only service provided. Note that routine flushing or irrigation prior to or after infusion or chemotherapy services should not be separately reported.
