Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Concurrent Chemotherapy Drug Infusions?

Question:

How would you report concurrent chemotherapy drug infusions? In our infusion center, we have patients who are receiving two chemotherapy drugs. During the patient’s first visit, the drugs are administered separately, so we are reporting Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 96413 Chemotherapy administration, intravenous infusion technique; up to 1 hour, single or initial substance/drug with CPT® code 96417 Chemotherapy administration, intravenous infusion technique; each additional sequential infusion (different substance/drug), up to 1 hour (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure) for this visit.
For subsequent visits, the chemotherapy drugs are administered concurrently. How would this visit be reported?

Answer:

There currently is no concurrent chemotherapy CPT® code. For the subsequent visits, consider reporting CPT® code 96413 Chemotherapy administration, intravenous infusion technique; up to 1 hour, single or initial substance/drug for the first hour chemotherapy. For the second chemotherapy administration, consider reporting CPT® code 96549 Unlisted chemotherapy procedure.
