Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: CPT Code for IV Filter Placement?

Question:

What CPT would be used for an IVC filter placement in the bilateral external iliac veins? Code 37191 is for placement in the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, or common iliac vein. I have a patient where filters were placed in the bilateral external iliac veins.

Answer:

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 37191 Insertion of intravascular vena cava filter, endovascular approach including vascular access, vessel selection, and radiological supervision and interpretation, intraprocedural roadmapping, and imaging guidance (ultrasound and fluoroscopy), when performed does not list anatomy within the code. You may report 37191 with modifier 50 Bilateral Procedure to report the inferior vena cava (IVC) filter bilaterally in the external iliac veins.
