Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: CPT Code for PICC Line Attempted?

Question:

What Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code would be used if our clinical staff attempted to insert a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), but after several attempts was only able to place a midline catheter?

Answer:

Because unsuccessful attempts are considered part of the successful procedure, the midline catheter insertion would be reported. Current guidance states that venipuncture codes 36400-36410 would be used.
