Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Facility Reporting of 95972?

Question:

Would it be appropriate to report CPT® 95972 for the facility side, when performed during the implantation, or during the replacement, of an InterStim™ generator?

Answer:

When a neurostimulator device is placed, calibration of the device is considered an inherent component of the procedure and is not separately reported when performed during the same operative session. There are important parenthetical notes associated with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 95972 ELEC ALYS IMPLT NPGT CPLX SP/PN PRGRMG stating that the service should not be reported at the same time as the implantation of the device.
