Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: ICD-10-CM Code for Delta Variant of SARS CoV-2?

Question:

Our providers are wanting to use more specificity in diagnosing COVID-19 variants. Our laboratory provides testing to determine genome sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants. The difficulty is finding an ICD-10 code that accurately captures the strain or variant of COVID-19. What ICD-10 code(s) should be used to identify this condition?

Answer:

Unfortunately, there are no International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes established for the different COVID-19 variants. For patients who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, code U07.1 COVID-19 is appropriate. There were no codes for variants released for the new fiscal year, beginning October 1, 2021.
