Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Manual Reduction of Hernia?

Question:

How would you report a manual reduction of a hernia that is performed in the emergency department (ED)?

Answer:

The manual reduction of a hernia may be a component of your facility’s evaluation and management (E/M) level. If the manual reduction is the only service performed, then Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 49999 Unlisted procedure, abdomen, peritoneum and omentum may be reported.
