Ask a Rev Cycle Expert: Special View Chest X-Rays?

Question:

Special view chest x-rays are coded with CPT 71046 (2 views). What code should be used when patient receives an expiratory view only?

Answer:

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code selection is based upon the number of views taken. If only one view is taken, such as an expiratory view, then CPT® code 71045 Radiologic examination, chest; single view would be appropriate.
